Math, microeconomics or criminal justice
1 + y < -13
or
1+y = -13 or 1+y < -13
that equality and inequality, the = and the < signs are put together as < to get
1+ y < -13
solve by subtracting 1 from both sides
1+y-1 < -13-1
y < -14
"one plus a number y is no more than -13"
is the same as saying
"one plus a number y is less than or equal to -13"
or
"one plus a number y is not greater than -13"
it can also be mathematically be described by saying y is an element of the interval (-infinity, -14]
the bracket ] means the interval includes the right
end point, -14. the parenthesis ( means it does not include the left endpoint.
"is an element of" has a math symbol which is a "c" with a horizontal line in the middle of the "c," looks sort of like an "e" but without the right end of the horizontal part touching the top curve, sort of like: y e (-infinity, -14]
The infinity also has a math symbol that looks like an 8, but on its side.
it could also be described as "one plus a number y is not greater than -13"
1+y "is not greater than" -13 The "is not greater than" has a symbol > with a slash through it, /.
But best answer though is: 1+y < -13
