Question

Adam and Jill each improved their yards by planting daylilies and geraniums. They bought their

supplies from the same store. Adam spent $56 on 7 daylilies and 7 geraniums. Jill spent $94 on

14 daylilies and 8 geraniums. What is the cost of one daylily and the cost of one geranium?

Answer 1

7D + 7G = 56

14D + 8G = 94

7D + 4G = 47

subtract last equation from 1st

to get

3G = 56-47 = 9

G = 9/3 = $3 per geranium

D = 8-3 = $5 per daylily

check the answers:

7(3) + 7(5) = 21 +35 = 56

14(5) + 8(3) = 70+24 = 94
