had gone vs went

That was the first time I had gone hiking". I saw this phrase spoken by a native speaker on youTube. I was wondering if I could say "That was the first time I went hiking".

May I know what's the idfference? Thanks

This is one of those common statements native speakers make, but "had went" is grammatically incorrect. The correct verb form is "It is the first time I had gone hiking." Gone is the part participle of the verb "go," and when we use a part participle, we need an auxiliary verb like "had." (auxiliary verbs are also called helping verbs). The difference is that "went" is the simple past tense form of "go" and does not need an auxiliary verb like "had." Thus, here is the easiest way to remember this---when using a form of the auxiliary verb "to have" do not use a simple past tense verb. We could get into an explanation of perfect tenses and part participles, but that can get a bit complex and confusing. I find with my students, especially my ESL students, it's less confusing to explain the simplest version of "the rule" so that they understand proper usage. Also keep in mind that in casual speaking, many of these rules get broken and often times, people don't mind. This also depends on the rule that is broken. As I said in my first line, "had went" is one of the most common usage errors in English, and not many people notice this particular error when conversing casually. I'm glad you did, though!
