Hi, Liz!
PEMDAS is an acronym, which means that each letter stands for a word:
Parentheses ()
Exponents 2
Multiplication x
Division ÷
Addition +
Subtraction -
People use the acronym "PEMDAS" to remember which order to do those steps in. Please note: It doesn't matter which order you do multiplication/division in, or addition/subtraction in. Just make sure that you do ALL multiplication and division before ANY addition and subtraction. Usually, I just go left to right, like reading.
7-24÷8x4+6 has no parentheses or exponents, so you can skip those steps. Solving the multiplication and division from left to right, it would look like this.
24÷8= a
a x 4 = b
Now you're solving this: 7 - b + 6
Moving on to addition and subtraction, we can move from left to right again:
7-b=c
c+6=d
In this case, d would be your final answer. Just start from the top and plug your answer from each problem into the next one. The hardest part of PEMDAS is making sure to not use a number twice. So, for instance, if you used 24 in your first step, that 24 is all used up and you never need it again.
I hope that helps!
