The simple answer for this is multiplication:
3 * 2 * 2 = x
3 * 4 = x
12 = x
If you want to visualize it, think of this:
We have 3 breads. each one can hold a type of cheese, and we have 2 of those. That is, for every bread, there's two possibilities,
so 3 * 2 = 6.
Now for each of those sandwiches, we have two types of meat, or for each of our 6 sandwiches, there's a choice of 2 meats.
6 * 2 = 12.
