For some context, when Americans were colonists, the western border was the Appalachian Mountains. After the Revolutionary War, the western border was the Mississippi River. Later, Lewis and Clark explored the western territory, Jefferson doubled the size of the U.S. with the Louisiana purchase, cotton dominated farming in the South, transportation improved, and eventually, the idea of Manifest Destiny took hold. As you can see, there's a lot to the story.
