How important is it to be concise when writing?

It is very important when writing essays and research papers! As I like to tell my students, "Say it once, and say it well!" Make sure it's clear from your very first words what the topic is and your purpose for writing the particular piece. The reader will appreciate this approach, and your communication will be stronger!

In most settings, it is important to be concise. Having unnecessary words or details can distract from the focus of the writing, and can create an unnecessary barrier between the author and the reader.

As my father would say..."a picture does not have unnecessary lines, a machine unnecessary parts, and writing shouldn't have unnecessary words."
