one of the numbers is x and the other is y
six times a number equals another
6 * x = y
their sum is 28 means adding them
x + y = 28
The first equation has y by itself so we can substitute. In the second equation instead of putting y, I am going to replace it with the first equation, 6x
x + y = 28
x + 6x = 28 combine like terms
7x = 28 divide by 7
x = 4 plug back into either equation to find y
6*x = y
6*4 = y
y = 24
x = 4 and y = 24
