I’m writing a book and I don’t know if the protagonist should fall in love with a girl or a boy?

Out of curiosity: is the protagonist in your story a boy or girl themselves? What is their approximate age? Are there (intended to be) more boy or girl characters in the book overall? Is your target audience predominantly male or female, or 50/50?

Chances are your own thoughts and answers to each of the above questions will help you determine if the protagonist in your forthcoming literary work should fall in love with a boy or girl respectively.

That would depend on who the protagonist is and what they want most in their life. Also it would depend on what kind of a society they live in. For example: in ancient Greece, love between males was perfectly okay, but in our world, many countries frown upon same sex romance. If you want to crank up the tension in your novel, you can put your protagonist into a homophobic society. Although this does have to go with the theme of your novel, the world building, your character development, etc. The person with whom your protagonist falls in love with should NOT be chosen at random.
