Solution:
To write the equation in function notation, it has to be put in the form of y = mx+b
So, in x-y = 3 rearrange terms and isolate y on one side. To do that add -x to both sides of the equation
x-y-x = 3-x , -y = 3-x , Multiply both sides of the equation by -1, (-1)(-y) = (-1)(3) -(-1)(x)
y = -3 + x or y = x - 3 which is of the form mx + b where m=1 and b=-3 with x an independent variable
which means that the value of y changes with a change in the independent variable x. In other words for each value of the independent variable x, there is only one value of y
Ex let x = 1, then y = 1-3 = -2
let x =-1, then y = -1-3= -4 and so on
as you can see, there is only one value of y for each value of the independent variable x
Further more y = x-3 is also an equation of a straight line y =mx+b with slope of m=1 and a y intercept of
b= -3
