Like terms are terms that can be combined. 2/3h and 1/3h are like terms. Think of "h's as something like apples. If you have 2/3 of an apple and you take away 1/3 of an apple, how many apples will you have?
1/3 of an apple, correct?
So 2/3h - 1/3h = 1/3h
So when we combine those terms in the equation, it gives you: 1/3h + 11 = 8
Now, you ultimately want to get your equation to look something like this: h = 2 (2 is just an example). That means everything that is not an "h" needs to be removed from the left side of the equation. "11" is not an "h" so let's get rid of it. To do that, make it zero by subtracting 11. But you MUST keep an equation balanced, so subtract 11 from both sides of the equation:
1/3h + 11 = 8
-11 -11
---------------------
1/3h = -3
Now, you want to turn the 1/3h into just plain "h". To do so, do the opposite of what is currently happening to the "h". 1/3 is currently being multiplied by "h" or, you could also think about it as "h" being divided by "3". The opposite of dividing by 3 is multiplying by 3. So multiply both sides of the equation by 3.
1/3h = -3
x3 x3
--------------
h = -9
