According to the first stage in Erik Erikson's theory of psychological development, the development of trust vs. mistrust is established during a period beginning at birth and continuing to approximately 18 months. This is determined by the stability and consistency of care provided by the infant's primary caregiver. If the infant receives a consistent, reliable level of care during this period, Erikson states that they will develop the ability to trust, allowing them to feel secure in future relationships, even at times where they may feel threatened or vulnerable. On the other hand, if they are not given this consistency and have an established sense of abandonment during infancy, they will be more prone to the development of heightened anxiety, mistrust, and suspicion, which may follow into their subsequent relationships.
