Both words are Latin in origin. As to who "invented" it, I suppose it would be those who settled in Spain during and after the Roman empire. Estar comes from the word stare which in Latin means to stand, ser comes from the Latin word sedere which means to sit or to reside. Language is not invented, it is developed over years of trial and error in communication. In modern Spanish estar is used for stating temporary situations like your current location or feelings (i.e. estoy en el supermercado) where as ser is use for things that don't change often like a job or a characteristic (i.e. Eres perezoso (lazy)).

When you come to Spain, you will see a lot of eagles of St. John everywhere. You can seek eagle of St. John in google images and you will see a lot of them in Spain. Why?. Exactly, because the origin of the verb ser and estar is located in the Gospel of St. John. If you read St. John 1 1 you will read “Al principio existía el verbo, y el verbo ESTABA junto a Dios y el verbo ERA Dios”. This sentence is the first sentence which was made the differentiation between ser and estar. The same sentence but in english “In the beginning was the word, and the word WAS with God and the word WAS God”. Can you see the difference?. That means that an english speaker can’t understand the Gospel of St. John. Why not?. Because you are not PHILOSOPHERS. Because St. John was a greek philosopher who dwelled in Patmos island in greeceland where wtote the Gospel of St. John and the Apocalypsis. Then, WHAT is the difference between ser and estar?. PHILOSOPHICAL. St. John took the Latein verb sum. Ergo SUM, tu es, ille EST. And assigned SUM for the essentials things, and EST for non essential things. What is an essential thing?. Very easy, the things you where born and with the things which you will be buried with, for example your hand, your leg,… this is essential for you. And accidental things are the things that you will not be buried with. For example your clock, shoes, stocks, trousers.,,this is not essential for you. And the difference between ser and estar is philosophical. If you have a conversation with the verb ser and estar you will finish philosophing. That means that spanish is more than a language a philosophical system based in the difference of the verbs ser and estar. In your examples of the verbs you will see that the examples of the verb ser are all essential things, and estar accidental things. You will see that i am the first youtuber that explain the difference between ser and estar and i have made other video, the first video, which explain the history of the verbs and estar. I am very proud because i have recovered a forgotten knowledge very important as is the difference between ser and estar and its history. I will make you a question that any “teacher” of the verbs will make you because they don’t know the difference but my pupil says is an excellent question to understand the difference: what is the color of an orange painted of white?.09/10/21
