x is a variable, whose value varies depending on what k equals. k is an unknown constant. they could use c for constant, which is the 1st letter of "constant." But k has that c sound too, so k gets used sometimes. math uses earlier alphabet letters for constants, and end of the alphabet letters for variables, like x, y and z.
The value of x depends on the value of k.
For instance: if k = 0 , then x = 4/3
if k = 1 , then x = 1
