In the history of art, the representation of the eye was very successful:
The image of the eye, by virtue of its importance as a sense organ, symbolizes the divine eye that sees everything among almost all peoples. In ancient times, the eye usually appeared as a representation of the sun god. The Bible also speaks of the "eye of God" to represent its omnipresence and omniscience. Starting from the Renaissance, in Christian iconography, the eye was drawn inside a triangle, with reference to the mystery of the Trinity.
We can find examples already starting from Egyptian art, up to Odilon Redon (1840-1916), a French symbolist painter who inspired De Chirico, the metaphysical painter who was a source of inspiration for Dadaism and Surrealism; the eye will recur in the works of various artists such as Man Ray, Max Ernst, and René Magritte, influenced by his paintings rich in symbolic meanings as well as by his thinking inspired by the philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer and the concept of the apparition, according to which the dream image arouses desire and surprise and presents itself to the sleeper both as a reality and as a way to overcome human possibilities.
