The subjunctive mood is used to express a wish, doubt or possibility or contrary to fact condition.

-Expresses hypothetical, potential or uncertain actions or states, a feeling or attitude. It is used to say how things may be and not to say how they really are.

-The present subjunctive can be defined in terms of the situations in which it is used,

And they usually fit into these categories:

-         Desire

-         Ignorance

-         Emotional statement or comment

-         Impersonal opinion

-         Uncompleted action

-         Vague or indefinite antecedent

-         Use :“Perhaps” and “maybe”

-         Use: “Even if”

Each of the sentences with a blank includes a key phrase that signals that the verb for the blank needs to be in the subjunctive form of the verb. The key phrases are the ones that express doubt, fear, hope, etc. These are often phrases that non-heritage speakers have to memorize that automatically signal the use of the subjunctive.

To form the subjunctive remember to start with the present tense yo form of the verb, then add the "opposite ending". For -ar verbs add the corresponding -er/-ir verb ending. With -er/-ir verbs, add the corresponding -ar verb ending.

For example: tener: yo form = tengo; take off the -o and add whatever new ending you need: for nosotros it would be tengamos, for ud. it would be tenga, etc.

For example: hablar: yo form = hablo; take off the -o and add the corresponding ending you need: for nosotros it would be hablemos; for ella it would be hable, etc.

There are irregulars that you have to be careful about: ser: sea, seas, etc. ; ir: vaya, vayas, etc.
