the length of a rectangular garden is 3 ft less than twice its width. The garden is surrounded by a path with a uniform width of 3ft. If the total area of the garen and path combined is 108 sq ft. what are the dimensions of the garden?

(L+6)(w+6) = 108

(2w-3+6)(w+6) = 108

2w^2 +15w + 18 = 108

2w^2 +15 - 90 = 0

w = -15/4 + or - (1/4)sqr(225+720)

w = -3.75 +/-.25sqr945

w =about -3.75 +/-.25(30.741)

width = about 3.935 feet

Length = 2w-3 = about 4.870 feet

dimensions of the garden are bout 3.935 by 4.870 feet

9.935 x 10.870 = about 107.993 = about 108 ft^2
