A local store has two types of hard candy, one that sells for $1.30 per pound, and the other for $0.90 per pound. How much of each type of candy should be used to create 100 lb of a mix that will sell for $1.00 per pound?

1.3x + .9(100-x) = 100

1.3x-.9x = 100-90

.4x = 10

x=10/.4 = 100/4 = 25 pounds of $1.30

mixed with

100-x = 75 pounds of $0.90

to get a mix of

100 pounds of $1

90 is much closer to 100 than 130 is (100-90=10, 130-100 = 30, 30=3(10))

3 times closer so you need 3 times as much

75 = 3(25)
