If you know how to determinant, here is the way to do this:

|-3 5 1|
|-4 2 1|
The above array is intended as a determinant. The area of the triangle is 1/2 the value of this determinant.

But the determinant should not be negative if you enter the values of the vertices in order with the area to the left as you go from one vertex to the next.
