For example, the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s forced American society and lawmakers to reform society by passing the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights act, both of which were made possible by a social reform movement. The same effect can be seen with the women’s suffrage movement earlier, or the gay rights movement more recently. Social reform movements help democratic societies become more equal, more just, and frankly, more democratic.
