In 1831-1833, South Carolina attempted to declare federal Tariffs null and void within the state of South Carolina. This put the state of South Carolina and President Andrew Jackson in conflict because it put into question which is more powerful- the rights of the state or the rights of the federal government. If state's rights were more powerful, this would undermine the power of Andrew Jackson, who is a part of the federal government. Ultimately, the federal government came out on top, asserting that the laws of the federal government will always be more powerful than those of the states.
