Ultimately, the Supreme Court ruled in this case that the laws of the state of Georgia could not apply to the Cherokee Indian nation because they of treaty regulations (and the fact that, theoretically at least, they were independent). Worcester basically argued that Georgia law could not apply to Indian territory, and the court agreed. Regrettably however, Georgia basically just ignored this ruling completely. Moreover, even President Jackson refused to enforce the court’s order, ultimately allowing any state to impose their laws on Native tribes. This would eventually lead to the Indian Removal Act.
