What is area in mathematics

How do you explain what area is so that every student understands? Especially someone with a disability.

Area is the space occupied within a two-dimensional figure. I like to discuss perimeter and area of a figure with my students as a grass section with fence around it. Perimeter is how much fence it takes to surround the area (length of the sides) and area is how much grass is inside the fence.

You call it square units and there is a unique way of solving for area depending on the figure.
