Neurotransmitters are specifically involved in nervous tissue cell (neuron) signaling while hormones are generally secreted by cells in tissues/glands into the bloodstream to communicate with cells in other tissues/glands. There are different types of hormones, water-soluble and lipid-soluble which operate differently in this cell-cell signaling process. Both communicate signals, but neurons are rapid-fire releasing amongst one another. Hormones are usually slower. It takes time to see the physiological change from hormones, especially if they act to initiate protein synthesis and genetic expression, which can be a somewhat timely process.
