Steve has a fish tank shaped as a rectangular prism that has a height of 21 cm, a length of 17
cm, and a width of 12 cm. If Steve leaves 4 cm of space without water, what is the volume of
the water he does put in the tank?

To find the volume of water, we must find the volume of the tank. The volume of a rectangular prism is found by multiplying together the length, height, and width: V=lwh
"4 cm of space without water" means that the water will not fill the whole tank, however, but end four cm before the top. We must therefore subtract 4 cm from the height before we find the volume.
21-4=17 Our new height is 17. We can now use the Volume formula: V=17*12*17
V=3468 cm squared
If I remember my metric training correctly, that's 3.468 liters.

V = (17)(17)(12) The first 17 is 21 - 4
