Math, microeconomics or criminal justice
4L + 3C = 252
L = 4C+6
4(4C+6) + 3C = 252
16C +24 + 3C = 252
19C = 252-24 = 228
C = 228/19 = 12 cappuccinos
L = 4(12) + 6 = 48+6 = 54 lattes
the problem is sort of set up to use substitution. It gives you L in terms of S, so substitute the given value of L in terms of S. Trying to eliminate by adding or subtracting equations would require more work as you'd have to multiply the 2nd equation by 4. 4L = 16C+24 then rewrite it as
4L-16C = 24 subtract that from the 1st equation 4L+3C = 252 to get
19C = 228
C=228/19 = 12
but either method works, with minimal work
