This is a "Completing the Square" Example. The best way I know how to do this is to remember the form of a quadratic: ax2 + bx + c = y. Your h value will be equal to h = -b/2 which will give you h = -3. Now you have y = (x+3)2 + k = y. If you set the 2 equations equal to each other, you can solve for k.
(x+3)2 + k = x2 + 6x + 5
Expanding the squared term:
x2 + 6x + 9 + k = x2 + 6x + 5.
Solving for k gives you k = -4.
In total:
y = (x+3)2 - 4
Hope this helps
