A great way of thinking of the process of memory is to think of an experience in your daily life or even something you learn in school.
For example: we encode things into memory that we find important, such as learning a new subject in school, if we want to remember that topic we will "consolidate" it into memory (we will review it and really get a grasp on the topic so we don't forget it) then we will use retrieval when we need to recall that information such as for a quiz or test.
