"The perimeter of a rectangle is 46m and its area is 126m². Use your knowledge of solving quadratics to determine the dimensions of the rectancle."

A=LW= 126

P=2L+2W = 46

L+W = 23

L= 23-W

A=(23-W)W = 126 = 23W-W^2

W^2 -23W +126 = 0

W= 23/2 + or - (1/2)sqr(23^2 -4(126)) = 11.5 + or - .5(5)= 11.5+2.5 or 11.5-2.5 = 14 or 9

W = 9 or 14

L = 23-9 or 23-14 = 14 or 9

dimensions are 9 by 14 meters

9x14 = 126

2(9+14) = 2(23) = 46
