IF 85 miles apart, that could form a right triangle with base = 85(5280) feet and height 14776

or 448,800 base with 14,776 height, or base = 85 miles and height 2,.8 miles

distance from top of Mt. Whitney to bottom of Death Valley would be d = sqr(85^2 + 2.8^2) = about 85.05 miles = 85 1/20 miles
