The United American Colonies were first to achieve independence from the British Empire, among world wide British colonies. "The sun never set on the British Empire" was the mantra.
The British beat Napoleon at Waterloo, but couldn't win against Americans, in 1776 or in the War of 1812 (sometimes called the 2nd war for independence). Britain considered intervening in our Civil War, on the side of the Confederates, for commercial reasons, plus to regain their American colonies, but gave up the idea.
