How much childhood experiences are thought to impact adults depends on the psychology theory from which one is examining the question. Some theories, for example, do not believe that childhood experiences do not significantly impact people as adults. On the other hand, The American Academy of Pediatrics reports that in a study of approximately 17,000 middle-class Americans, adverse childhood experiences can significantly contribute to negative adults health outcomes--both mental and physical.
