What is the rule for the sequence.

So me and my daughter have been having some troubles with math. The question is " Select the rule for the sequence, 11 3/16, 9 7/8, 8 9/16, ______, 5 15/16" Then it asks if you're subtracting and what you are subtracting, after that it wants to know what goes in the unknown term ( The blank). Anyone, please help!

Hi Elisa,

I noticed that the largest denominator you were dealing with was 16 in the mixed numbers.

So I converted all your mixed numbers into improper fractions.

11 3/16 = 179/16

9 7/8 = 158/16

8 9/16 = 137/16

5 5/16 = 95/16

The pattern that emerges is a decrease (subtraction) of 21/16 in each number in the sequence. Therefore that missing number should be 116/16, or to put it back into a mixed number, 7 1/4.
