Often the poll sample size is too small and fails to take into consideration the diversity of the population. Additionally, the people conduct the poll many times are private intuitions who paying for a specific political interest. This can often led to the data being slanted one way or the other. This is why Fox News and MSNBC put up the same poll they get such different results. Lastly, as Rousseau pointed out in Social Contract as a nation grows larger it is difficult to have a truly representative without that body in turn growing too large to be effective.
