This can depend on the time frame you are looking at and actual geographical areas.
In general, cattle ranching on the Great Plains worked well for the natural environment. The Great Plains had nutrient-rich grasses and cattle were able to graze on these just like the bison had done before them. It was the main activity as opposed to being part of farming. It was done on horseback.
In contrast ranching in the north, depending on what geographical area you are exploring, could be very similar or very different.
