When I work with ESL students, I find that the accommodation can often depend on the individual student’s needs.
I shorten their assignments which allows them to keep up with their peers and thus builds confidence and equality.
I allow them to look up key vocabulary that they struggle with.
I will often read the instructions out loud and answer any questions they may have at the beginning so that they get off to a good start.
I support their literacy development by encouraging them to read books in English.
I communicate thoroughly with their core subject teachers so that the teachers have the knowledge and tools to serve their ELL students.
I am sure to model the English language correctly and to enunciate and include vocabulary to challenge my students.
I also provide visual aids to help my students.
There are many ways to serve our ELL students and these are just a few examples.
