The external intercostals and diaphragm are the main muscles of inspiration. The diaphragm contracts and pushes down increasing the thoracic cavity. The external intercostals contract to elevate the ribs. Accessory muscles would be the sternocleidomastoid, the anterior scalenes, and pectoralis minor. These muscles help elevate the sternum and upper ribs.
