You can go to a store to buy a pair of pants. You can either use a 10% off discount coupon OR you can use a discount 25% off coupon. You can’t use both, however. For what price for the pair of pants would you end up paying the same amount for either discount method?

Math, microeconomics or criminal justice
(1-.1)A = (1-.25)B
.9A = .75B
A/B =.75/.9 = 75/90 = 25/30 = 5/6
when the prices of the pants are in a 5 to 6 ratio, then the discounts could make the ultimate price the same fore each pair
10% off a cheaper pair of pants will be the same as 25% off a more expensive pair
Let one pair cost $100 and the other $120
10% off $100 leaves $90 discounted price $100-$10=$90
25% off $120 leaves $90 discounted price $120-$30 = $90

0.9x = 0.75y, 6x = 5y. So x < y. We have to end up with pair of pants with price x and apply 25% discount coupon
