You're looking for the biggest whole number (integer) that can divide evenly (with no remainder) into both 48 and 80
those 8's common to both is a small clue so try it
8(6 +10) still 6 and 10 can be divided by 2 so divide again
8(2)(3+5)
the greatest (largest) common (to both 48 and 80) factor (divisor) is 8x2 or 16
16 divides into 48 evenly, 48/16 = 3
and 16 divides evenly into 80: 80/16 = 5
so you factor 48 + 80 into
16(3+5) 3 and 5 have no common integer factors, so that's as far as you can go
