The ratio of Chex Mix to chocolate chips is 3:2. Therefore, whatever the number of cups of Chex Mix, it has to be a multiple of 3. Likewise, the number of cups of chocolate chips is a multiple of 2. If they are to stay in a ratio of 3:2, then they must be multiplied by the same number. In other words, the ratio of Chex Mix to chocolate chips is 3x:2x, where x is some multiplier.
We know that the total number of cups of combined trail mix is 45, so we can set 3x + 2x = 45 in order to solve for the multiplier x.
3x + 2x = 45
5x = 45
x = 9
Thus, the number of cups of Chex Mix in the bag is 3x = 3*9 = 27 cups and the number of cups of chocolate chips is 2x = 2*9 = 18 cups. Indeed, we see that 27 + 18 = 45 and 27/18 = 3/2 as required.
