In the Declaration of Independence the British colonists in America declared their reasons for wanting to break away from Britain. They had been tasked with paying for the French and Indian War through taxes that they had not approved. This went directly against their ideas of how laws (and taxes) should implemented after first consulting with the people "no taxation without representation." So when the colonists wrote the Declaration they listed out their grievances with King George III and explained why they wanted to establish a government/ country of their own.
