A metal bowl with a weight of 1.25 N is placed in a larger kitchen container filled with soybean oil. How much soybean oil must the bowl displace in order to float? For reference, the mass density of soybean oil is about 917 g/liter and its weight density is about 8.99 N/liter. Please give your answer in liters.

I have tutored math for 4 years. High school and college levels.
Two forces on the bowl. Weight which is straight down, and bouyancy which is straight up. If it is floating these forces are equal in magnitude. So that tells you that the bouyancy force must equal the weight of the bowl. Fbouy=weight of bowl=mass density of fluid*acceleration due to gravity*Volume of displaced fluid. solve for V

Fg - 1.25N P(oil) - 917 g/Liter P(w) - 8.99N/Liter To find the displace you need to find the volume therefore V = (Fg/Pw) -- > 1.25/ 8.99 = 0.1390433815 or approximately 0.139 Liter04/09/22
