Middle school and high school are times when all we want to do is fit in. Adolescents are going through crazy levels of hormonal changes due to puberty, so sexual exploration is new and intriguing. There is a lot of pressure from others at these ages to do what one feels everyone else is doing. Relationships / friendships are often formed quickly and superficially, and often don't last long as a result. However, because of the hormones, this will often feel like the end of the world.
Emerging into young adulthood, hormone levels start to mellow out, and as does sexual behavior. Need for social approval also tends to subside, and relations with others tend to become less superficial. Friendships tend to be sparse, but more focused on genuine connection. Think quality over quantity.
