How does ID.me verify my identity?

Question

So I was asked to verify my identity through the website ID.me

I've heard they are legit but nonetheless I like to know how my info is being used and where it's being used.

So how does ID.me verify peoples identities? They ask for an ID scan I believe, so do they compare the pic of the ID to the DMW database? Or do they just ask for ID and selfie and SSN and verify that way?

They will ask for photo ID; and/or they will have you open a link and your webcam or cell phone camera will do a "live recognition" to make sure you are a real human...then you will be asked yes for your SSN.
