Hello! The preterite and imperfect are both used to talk about actions in the past. The preterite is used to talk about finished, completed actions, while the imperfect is used for reoccurring events in the past.
Examples:
Fui al supermercado anoche= I went to the supermarket last night (preterite, it happened once and finished)
Cuando era niña, siempre iba al supermercado con mi papá= when I was a little girl, I always used to go to the supermarket with my dad (imperfect- this happened over and over, reoccurring)
