To remember the difference easily, Type 2 diabetes is usually considered a life style disease, meaning it could be very well controlled with changes in the diet. As well as oral antidiabetic medicines.

Where as the type one diabetes is only managed with insulin injections, as the pancreas are unable to to produce insulin.

Type 1 diabetes is usually seen in young age groups, where as the type 2 is usually seen in older population.

Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus is an autoimmune disease in which your body produces antibodies that attack your pancreas(beta-pancreatic cells) where you produce and secrete insulin. If you do not have insulin the cells in your body cannot absorb glucose and you will have high blood glucose levels. Hence, you treat Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus with insulin.

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (simplified) is when your insulin receptors on your cells become insulin resistant. This can be due to numerous factors such as genetics, diet, weight etc. It is harder to treat type II diabetes because giving insulin does not help. There are medications such as metformin that are used to help decrease the insulin resistance(increase insulin sensitivity) of the insulin receptors on cells.
