A scientist mixes water (containing no salt) with a solution that contains 45% salt. She wants to obtain 135 ounces of a mixture that is 20% salt. How many ounces of water and how many ounces of the 45% salt solution should she use?

Y is the amount of the 45% salt solution

X+Y = 135

The salt concentration however is :

0*X + 0.45Y = 0.2(135)

0.45Y = 27

Y = 60

X = 75

so of the 135 ounces, 60*.45 = 27 of them is salt.

which is 27/135 = 9/45 = 1/5 = 0.2 = 20%
