What is your preferred method of teaching?

As a special educator, while we have a foundational approach to teaching and instructional techniques, each student is a unique learner. This is especially true in a tutoring setting. If it's a quick dive question that requires only a session or two, then a direct to the point approach is warranted. If the requirements of the students demands a more long term tutoring/teaching situation, part of the initial contact would be to assess the appropriate learning methods for each student.

When teaching children, I believe the best approach is a " hands on" experience. During this time of Covid 19, this is not always possible, but I feel if you can experience a lesson first hand then the skill will be more meaningful to the child. Learning is individual.Therefore, the lessons to should be tapered to the student's understanding and extended from there. Learning is mastered when the skills can be built one upon the other.

Without a strong foundation skills will not strengthened.Learning should be fun and not frustrating.

I like to create lessons that are individualized to the student. Students have different learning styles, some being visual learners, some auditory, and some hands-on. Lessons that are designed for the student's learning style, help students to be more successful. I also like to design lessons that start where the student can be successful and leads them the next level. This way learning is continuous, and reduces frustration.

The current pandemic is providing opportunities for all of us to learn new ways to do things. Remote learning offers students a way to continue their education, enhance their communication skills, and become proficient in using technology as a tool. I am continuing my own learning as I find new ways to present lessons that are engaging, meaningful, and taught remotely.

I teach in ways that benefit my students by showing them how to use their own skills and resources right in front of and around them to creatively apply what they are learning and already know towards aspects of everyday life that will help them prepare for future life changes, experiences, and situations that will inevitably occur not too far down the line.

I also teach in ways that allow me to integrate my own tools and resources that work best for me as an educator and will therefore allow me to be the best possible teacher I can be for my pupils.

As long as teacher and student remain on the same page, maintain good working chemistry, and can communicate smoothly and effectively, with the student noticeably growing internally and gaining a better overall understanding of what they are learning each and every day, then mission accomplished.

I, personally, love to teach with Montessori methods; such as, doing hands on experiments, leading project based lessons, allowing different learning styles to assist one another, asking open ended questions to group discussion, and so on. Every child is beautifully unique and should learn with excitement in their own personal way.
