If you use a scale factor of 1/3m, then 3 cm is reduced to 1 cm, and 9 cm is reduced to 3 cm. You get this by multiplying 3 x 1/3 ad 9 x 1/3, giving you 1 and 3.
If the new rectangle has dimensions 1 cm and 3 cm, can you figure out what it's area is? Remember, A = length x width.
A = LW where L = 3 and W = 1.
A= (3)(1) = 3 cm2
