With interrupted learning at school, what can I do over the summer to help?

Your local public library might be offering online courses for free. For example, I have always wanted to learn Spanish, and my library is offering a variety of language courses online that will help me to do just that. If this sounds like a viable option, then visit your library's website or try calling them to see if they, too, are offering free online courses.

Also, if you are a more social learner and prefer to discuss the books that you read over the summer, then your library might be hosting virtual book club meetings on Zoom or on Google Hangouts. (I know that my local library is, because I get emails about these book clubs every other day, it seems).

A great idea to keep your brain going this summer is to make a goal of how many books you should read within a certain amount of time. Pick books on topics you truly like but also will learn something from. I also recommend writing down words from the book you don't understand, find the meaning and write down a sentence using the word. Therefore you won't only be using comprehension skills but also problem solving skills; you will also add upon your vocabulary.

A fun summer project is just the thing! If your child enjoys writing, what better way to pass the time than writing stories? With story ideas that interest your child, we can personalize this project. We can also informally work on spelling, punctuation, grammar, and sentence writing. For older students, we can add paragraph formation and main ideas. If your child does not know where to start, do not worry. I have plenty of ideas! We can write up each story in a 'professional' way and compile a book of stories at the end of the summer. This could be a fun and relaxing way to practice some skills.
